“Respect offers a strong foundation for classroom agreements because it can apply to the physical environment, instructional time, peer-to-peer and teacher-student interactions. ”
(Reframing Classroom Management: A Toolkit for Educators, page 8)
This sentence resonated with me the most because I think it is the fundamental principle for classroom management and agreement. To respect means to understand students’ personal background, religions, races, sexualities, social classes, and all the other information that could potentially influence their behaviours. It is the educators’ responsibility to gather as much information as possible and take it into account when managing the classroom.
It also connects to my phylosophy of education I mentioned in “Standard of Practice”. I mentioned that “As an educator, I always remind myself that every student has different abilities, and the goal is to make everyone feel like they are supported, included and respected by understanding each of them and giving personalised feedback. ”
As the world becomes more diverse, educators must continually reflect on anti-oppression and anti-racism in their practice. My goal is to create a classroom where every student can grow into an individual who is free from judgment. As an immigrant myself, I am committed to nurturing this kind of environment and doing so with constant awareness of my own potential biases.
